Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle
The Nordic Heritage Sport Club will host the 2010 USSA Cross Country Junior Olympic Championships in Presque Isle, Maine. This event, held under the auspices of the US Ski and Snowboard Association, is scheduled March 5-14, 2010. The 2010 JO Organizing Committee, led by Event Director Tim Doak and Event Manager Tim Veron, has been actively planning this event for some time. A small contingent flew to Truckee, California, on Friday, March 6, 2009 to attend last year's championship to observe and learn. "This championship will have the greatest number of participants coming to our area of any Nordic event yet to take place in Aroostook County," said Doak. "We expect to have over 700 hundred visitors coming to the region for an average of seven days. The event will attract over 400 athletes, 100 Team Staff and as a many as 200 parents. The immediate economic impact will be a significant boost to the local tourism industry and businesses." "The Junior Olympics is a great development tool for young athletes," said Eileen Carey, vice president of the Maine Winter Sports Center. "For the athletes coming to JO's, this will be the most important competition for their season. We hope to have several local athletes racing in front of their home town fans." As has been the practice in the past, the event will be run almost entirely by volunteers. While several community people have stepped up to fulfill key leadership roles, the committee is still seeking to identify the hundreds of volunteers that will be necessary to run the event. "During our last major event in 2006, we had over 400 volunteers organized to help," Doak explained. "We will be looking for about 200 volunteers for the 2010 USSA Cross Country Junior Olympic Championships. If anyone has an interest, they should contact Mary Lawrence, our Volunteer Coordinator. She can be reached at 768-9502 or email@example.com." Students at the University of Maine at Presque Isle have developed a website to disseminate information to the teams, fans and the local community.
