Black Bear
Did you know that Maine has more black bears than any other state east of the Mississippi River? In the State of Maine, Aroostook County is one of the best places to find them. If you’re looking for a bear, though, you’ll have to be patient. Black bears tend to be very shy and avoid being seen, but when you do you can expect males to weigh between 250 and 600 pounds while the females range from 100 to 400 pounds. You’ll see them crossing a road or as a black dot at the very edge of a hay or grain field. Often times, you'll see a mother with one or two cubs foraging for wild strawberries and other delicacies. Be sure to bring your binoculars for a good close up view, as bears really are best appreciated from a distance.
