Stockholm Landing and Trails

Description

There are two connected trail networks in downtown Stockholm Maine, Stockholm Landing and Trails and the Snowy Mountain Trails.

Stockholm Landing and Trails is a recreation area with access to walking, snowshoeing and skiing trails. It consists of two trail systems, the Loop Trails and the Tower Trail. The trails are for the most part of moderate grade, and have been built up and ditched to keep them dry.  There is access to snowmobile and ATV trails from the park and ride area and a boat launch on the Madawaska River.

About the trails

The Loop Trail includes a larger loop about 0.7 miles in length, and a secondary trail which shortens the loop down to about 0.5 miles. The Tower Trail is a 5-mile loop. Heading counter-clockwise from the parking area across the American Legion, the trail heads east through the Community Center field and encompasses the Snowy Mountain Trails system. It then travels along an ATV/snowmobile trail up to a 55-foot fire tower. The tower may be climbed for 360-degree panoramic views. The Tower Trail then continues on a downward trek encircling the north half of the village and finally linking back up the Loop Trails. Map it now

The Snowy Mountain Trails are located behind the Community Center on School Street. The trails are regularly mowed in the summer and well-groomed for skiing in the winter. They include two loop trails. Map it now

The Francis Anderson Loop (1.0 mile) is rolling and twisty with short steeper climbs and descents meant to test skier’s technical ability. The trail passes through mature forest and is home to many birds, making it a fantastic place for a walk or stroll on skis. The trail also crosses the Community Center field several times (follow arrow signs). The Anna Sprague Loop (1.0 mile), named for Stockholm's first Junior National ski champion, branches off the Francis Anderson Loop and has some short sections of steep terrain that fade into gradual climbs for nice classic skiing, followed by a long but manageable descent. Other Information

The recreation area also includes an ice-skating rink (near the Stockholm Landing and Trails boat launch and park and ride) and a picnic area next to the river.
