What to see and do in Ashland, Maine

Ashland, Maine, sits at the edge of the North Maine Woods and has been known as the gateway to that vast 3.5-million-acre wilderness since its incorporation in 1862, when timber harvesting drove the local economy and "King's Pine" trees were marked for the British Navy. That logging heritage is preserved today at the Ashland Logging Museum on Garfield Road, where a Lombard Log Hauler, replica camp, scaler's office, and hundreds of handmade tools tell the story of generations of woodsmen and women in Maine's Aroostook County. Ashland serves as a launching point for adventures into the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the St. John and Aroostook River systems for fishing, paddling, hunting, and camping, with connections to the Interconnected Trail System for snowmobiling and ATV'ing across Aroostook. Visit the Ashland Logging Museum and climb the Norway Bluff Fire Tower for sweeping views over Aroostook and the North Maine Woods.
