Island Falls Summerfest stands as the premier and most expansive multi-day community celebration in Southern Aroostook County, representing the absolute pinnacle of grassroots hometown fun. Spanning a glorious week and consecutive weekends of festivities, this massive summer spectacular transforms the historic heart of Island Falls into a vibrant, bustling hub of activity, drawing families, outdoor enthusiasts, and alumni from across New England and beyond. The festival is widely celebrated for its ability to combine traditional Maine hospitality with an incredibly diverse lineup of events, ranging from adrenaline-fueled whitewater river floats and competitive canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard races to pristine local art exhibitions and historic museum tours. Serving as a massive, multi-generational homecoming, Summerfest acts as a brilliant living showcase of the region's unmatched natural beauty, rich cultural legacy, and deep-seated community pride.

What truly elevates this festival to a bucket-list summer destination is its high-energy mix of unique, family-friendly spectacles and classic grandstand entertainment. The entire town unites for a series of unforgettable traditions, including a sprawling outdoor car show, live community concerts, a high-stakes cornhole tournament, and a dedicated 5K road race supporting local athletes. Crowd favorites like the hilarious, high-spirited "KenDucky Derby" rubber duck race, where spectators sport their finest derby hats, seamlessly blend with community breakfasts, traditional chicken barbecues, and continuous interactive scavenger hunts across the municipality. The extended multi-day celebration reaches its jaw-dropping climax with a spectacular fireworks display over the rolling greens of the local golf course, a massive themed parade, and a sprawling water-slide filled Family Fun Day. Sustained by a passionate network of local volunteers and organizations, Island Falls Summerfest represents the absolute crown jewel of Northern Maine summer memory-making.

Island Falls, Maine, settled in 1841 along the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River, holds a unique place in American history as the boyhood proving ground of Theodore Roosevelt, who first arrived in 1878 to hunt and fish under the guidance of legendary Maine guide William W. Sewall. Visitors can walk in Roosevelt's footsteps at Bible Point State Historic Site, a 27-acre preserve along Mattawamkeag Lake where the young future president went to read his Bible, and at the Sewall homestead, the town's first historic site. Today, Island Falls offers a chain of three interconnected lakes: Pleasant, Mattawamkeag, and Mud. You can fish, paddle, swim, and play the 18-hole Va-Jo-Wa Golf Club along the shores of Pleasant Lake with views of Mt. Katahdin. The town connects directly to the Interconnected Trail System for ATVing and snowmobile routes that reach Houlton, Millinocket, and Lincoln.
Aroostook County hosts a variety of vibrant events throughout the year.
